We just bought a new house and I wanted to plant a little pumpkin patch in my yard. (Halloween is really big here). I live in East Texas, Is it too late to plant them? I dont really want time for anything other then decoration in the yard...and so the kids can maybe go pick their own pumpkin when they come trick-or-treating.

I wasn't wanting to plant the BIG pumpkins..I was wanting to plant the small baseball sized ones, so they could carry them in their bags from house to house. Thanks for everyones answers. I will wait until next year.

Yes. They are generally planted when the soil warms up a bit; in May (around the middle of the month) here in CA. You can start them a couple of weeks before that in the house; but they are put out in the garden about that time.

They take 100 to 120 days to mature, so won't be ready for Hallowe'en. They don't set fruit very well in cool temperature and frost will kill them. Plant them next spring.

As to use them as trick or treat treats ... Do you really think kids will want to carry a pumpkin around to the next houses? Also each pumpkin plant produces only 1 or 2 pumpkins so plan for the number you will need. I don't think there is any such thing as a little pumpkin patch, one plant takes up at least a 6ft X 6ft space.

Yes...it is too late for this year. Here in Colorado, we always plant pumpkins between July 1-6. They ripen in time for fall without being over mature and before they rot. Most pumpkins take 100 to 120 days to mature and ripen. Try again next year.

It is too late. The best time to plant is after the danger of frost. It June 5th up here in the north. I planted mine the frist week of june and they are about average size now and are starting to turn orange.
You can also start them about 2-3 weeks early inside to maybe get them growing sooner.
Happy Halloween (a few weeks early)!

Pumpkins take a long time to grow, even in Texas. There's always next year.
