From Wikipedia:

In mathematics, a prime number (or a prime) is a natural number which has exactly two distinct natural number divisors: 1 and itself.

since 1 only has 1 X 1,

it only has one natural number divisor: 1, not 2 distinct ones, like 2 = 1 X 2 ( 2 natural number divisors: 1 AND 2)

therefore 1 is not a prime number
