The others are right. I don't doubt that Meyers is good and her Twilight Series is successful, but if the HP books weren't relegated to "children's books", it would be a million dollar bestseller question whether Twilight books could KNOCK HP out, wouldn't it? I don't begrudge her of that. She rightfully deserve it. I'm actually planning to start reading the books as soon as I find one in the bookstores in our place.

Finally, we don't need the New York Times to know that the Deathly Hallows is a bestseller. We all know that. It was, is and will always be a bestseller.

Here's a good site to check out for an answer to your question:

According to that author, back in 2000, three Harry Potter books were taking up three spots on the "Top 15" New York Times Bestseller list. Other authors complained.

Consequently, the Times decided to make a rule that kept Children's books off of the the Main Bestseller list and just keep them on a second list for "Children's Books", which is divided up into several lists such as "picture books", "chapter books", and so forth. All Harry Potter titles are now given one listing "Harry Potter" under the "Children's Book Series" group, where Harry has been listed for 153 weeks as of Sep 16, 2007.

In 2000, the New York Times re-labelled HP as children's novels because other publishers were whinging that these books were dominating the best seller's list. Quite childish and pathetic really but there you go. I do blame Scholastic to a degree though. They changed the title of the first HP book to appeal to kids and have messed with some of the language in the books. If they hadn't done this, the NYT would have had less recourse to claim the novels were for children.

It got bumped from consideration as a children's book. Too many author's didn't want to compete with it. It wasn't fair they they had to be compared to a cultural icon.
