Your fears are unwarranted. NASA tracks all NEO's. Your doomsday scenario is ficticious. 'What if' questions are ok to ponder as long as one keeps them in proper perspective. Once they approach the realms of this question, your thoughts become fanatical and obsessive. Unneccesarily worrying of such things is unhealthy. There are more likely things to worry about such as getting struck by lightning.

Here is a site where you can follow the paths of all known NEO's. You can visit it daily if the subject so consumes you.

If you find that you need to do more to satisfy yourself as an individual, there are groups to join such as Spaceguard.

meteoroids enter the Earth's atmosphere all the time. these are so small however, that due to friction with the atmosphere, they burn up before hitting. for this reason, the only reason for a global announcement would be if the asteroid either caused massive damages, or killed all life on the earth.

1.) people would panic. as far as they know, the government has no way to avert the collision. there would be mass suicides (we're overpopulated anyways, its ok [JUST KIDDING!])

2.)the residents of earth would be responsible. obviously, the government is consisted of many people that live on earth, so naturally, they're going to do everything they can to try and survive.

3.) firstly, if you live on earth, you are obligated to protect it. we have nuclear warheads. that counts as being prepared =)

4.) rofl are you kidding? trust Iraq with nuclear warheads? it would take a few nukes drilled deep into the asteroid to blow it into at least 2 pieces. I think the United States would be able to produce that.

4 (number2 =P).) well first I would do my part in destroying it (I am going to be majoring in engineering and/or physics next year when I go to the local university (i'm 14 by the way) if there was nothing we could do, I would just have fun. yes I know "fun" is just a surge of hormones into our brains, but I still find it interesting to see peoples expressions when I do weird things. like dancing outside of the post office without a shirt, wearing a grass skirt, chugging a bottle of Dr. Pepper, after dyeing by entire body green, wearing sunglasses, and pretend people can't see me. or maybe just dye my hair florescent orange (dye hair red, then bleach it, my aunt did that once and it turned out nicely =P) and skip down the main aisle of walmart singing " I feel pretty." I would just cram all of the crazy things I though about doing in my life into that single month. heck I would profess my undying love for my cousin if it could get a laugh.

5.) I don't think canned food and bottled water in your storm shelter are going to protect you from an asteroid.

im sure its possible to nuke it, and then any pieces would burn up and explode in the lower atmophere and the bigger pieces would atleast get smaller. if not theres other plans use a series of smaller explosions to move its obrit, or even launch a shuttle into space and use its small gravity to change the path of the asteroid just a fraction of a degree and possibly make it miss us. either way, we keep a list of dangerous asteriods commets and meteors and when they will hit. the closest possible hit is in like the 2030's.
