For the past week or so when I have turned on my puter the dial-up connecter pops up automatically and it will not let me cancel it out. I sometimes use wireless instead of dial-up and have had no problems with this box coming up until recently. If I click cancel or the x box, the box will go away and come right up again. It will even do this when I am not trying to use the internet at all. If I open word, that box pops up in the way making my computer unusable (it won't minimize, just stays in the way) until I connect to a dial-up connection. I haven't been able to use this wireless thing at all since this started.

How do I get this to stop?

I have a firewall and have run scans with security software. It hasn't shown anything.

I have to agree with the other answerer. Just running an anti-virus scan may not catch adware and spyware.

A note of caution: That dial-out may seem just a nuisance, but the number it's trying to dial could be a very expensive call, and your phone company may not be the least bit sympathetic to your compaints. If you're not using that dial-up modem, I suggest you disconnect it from the phone line.

I also suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run them. If they don't seem to be able to get rid of everything they report finding, try running them again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode prevents many instances of malware from loading and protecting themselves against deletion of their files.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.
4. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. You may have to log in as Administrator to delete the bad files. Administrator often has no password.
5. When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run both regularly, along with a good anti-virus package.

Good luck.

YOU are infected!!! You need to clean out the virus, Trojan or worm that is causing the problem. It most likely is a dialer program that is trying to access the net. If you have the "package": AVG, Zone alarm, Ad-aware, Spybot-se, Spywareblaster and a Host file, you wouldn't have the problem in the first place. All these are free and should be installed in the order listed and KEPT UP TO DATE!
