NIMBY - Not In My Back Yard. Everybody wants cheap energy but nobody wants to be near the by-products of that energy. A good example of this is the fact is the WIPP Site near Carlsbad, New Mexico (where they dispose of mid-level nuclear waste by entombing it in massive salt beds), which was approved by the State Government in Santa Fe. When the proposed travel routes included US 285 through Santa Fe the planners were told to find a different route. The attitude is "We don't care if it costs more money to ship it a different way, so long as you don't ship it through here".

The first poster said it right. Nobody wants it in their backyard. It would be safer to go ahead with the permanent storage site than have it scattered around the country in concrete barrels like it is now. There are "temporary" casks of nuclear waste sitting on the shores of the great lakes. It's insane to keep things this way.
