What size?

If you want to make "miniatures," check out some of the lessons and links to examples from these pages:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/miniatures.htm
(...look at the CAKES subcategory, under "Sweets"...)
http://glassattic.com/polymer/houses_structures_gingerbread.htm
(... click on COOKIES, PIES, CAKES....)

For larger fake cakes, sometimes acrylic modeling paste is used over a cardboard or other base of some kind ---or (colored) spackling, etc. can be used though it's not very strong.

For dollhouse miniatures, wood is used for the base and they are frosted or iced with thick acrylic paint. Fancy decorating is done with modified hypodermic needles.

For full-scale, "royal icing" is used. It's more pretty than tasty.
