A friend got me listening when I drive and I'm hooked.

Not so much anymore -- I'm retired.

But when I was commuting to work, I was totally hung up on books on tape. I'd be on the road in the early morning dark with a commuter mug of coffee, a soft glow from the dashboard, very little traffic, and a book on tape.

Sometimes I actually slowed down to miss signals or sat listening in the parking lot for 10 minutes. LOL.

Oddly enough, driving the car was always my top priority so sometimes I'd miss listening to parts of the book. That's why tapes were so simple -- rewind.

As a teacher, I don't advise it, really. People rarely retain as much from a book they've listened to instead of read. It's entirely too easy to become distracted and cease paying attention to the book. However, some people are auditory learners and need the stimulation of hearing the book out loud. This doesn't excuse them from reading it, because listening to a book does not give the same educational value as physically reading one will.

That being said, I listen to audio books when I'm cleaning house or on long road trips. I just choose books that I would be less inclined to sit down and read. Books that I don't feel I would be missing much if I zone out every once in a while. Sometimes though I find a gem and end up having to get the paper version to read so that I can make sure I've gotten the entirety of the book.

I do when I travel long distances but right now my commute is only 8 miles so I usually listen to music. When I'm home I prefer a real paper book, so the only time I really listen to books on tape or CD is on planes.

I really like to listen to books on Cd. After listening to a book on Cd you can talk to a person who read the same book and they will not tell you something you did not know.

I love books on CD and downloaded books from audible.com. You can also check out these books for free at your local library. Many libraries have books and music available for download, as well.

Here is an example from the New York Public Library.

I take trips often and it's a nice way to catch up on books. I put a book in on the way to work and it makes the drive go quickly. I check them out in the library and go to thrift stores.

Nope, I enjoy reading too much. Besides, listening to something like that in the car could easily get too distracting.
