Hi, I have had many garage sales over the years but not for many years lately. I am not a garage sale shopper altho I do Lot of 2nd hand shopping. I am going to be selling fabrics and brand new patterns, never cut or opened from my huge sewaholic stash :) what should I ask for the patterns and on the used clothing, if it is in good shape, I was just going to ask $1 for each item so i wouldn't have to price and what is left over I can sell next time for less. But will the lack of being able to bargain drive folks away. OK you garage salers who shop, need you advice. I live in So OR smaller type town, not much money around here.

I would say the prices I have chosen are like give aways and I have sold on ebay but by the time you pay fees all over the place and take the time to ship and all, on these particular items, I think garage sale would be better, kind of like things you have to see in person.

I don't have much experience with garage sales, but I do have experience with fabric because I quilt -- I have a huge stash of 100% cotton quilting fabrics. If there are 100% cotton fabrics in your collection, you might want to contact a local quilt guild or quilt shop to see if they know someone who might want to buy those specific fabrics. If your stash contains fabrics that were collected over a long period of time, someone may show a special interest in them -- "vintage" fabrics are popular. Quilter's might also be interested in other types of fabrics/items (velvets, brocades, silks, laces, ric-rac, buttons, etc.) if they make art quilts or crazy quilts; some may be interested in cotton-blend fabrics if they make charity quilts.

Depending on the age of the patterns, $1 may be a fair price. If they are only a couple of years old, maybe you could get more.

With regard to the used clothing, I'd check comparable items at resale shops to see what they are selling for. Quilters may be interested in cotton, flannel and denim items.

You should probably also advertise your sale in the local paper and put up flyers/signs so that more people know about it (maybe a local quilt/fabric shop will allow you to put up a flyer in their window) -- sometimes newspapers charge discounted rates for garage sale ads.

Good luck on your sale.

Well, since it's a garage sale, you can start out marking things with a little higher price and if it seems that someone is interested but put off by the price, tell them that you will sell it for X amount less. That's the beauty of a garage sale--people love a good bargain and if they think that they "talked you down", it will be easier to make the sale.

A dollar is good for used clothing. Maybe 50 cents if it is older or out of style.

For fabric, I would price it between 1-3 dollars.
People expect to get cheap stuff at garage sales and the point is to get rid of some junk around the house so price things cheap and it will sell faster.

People will bargain with you no matter what. If you sell something for 50 cents, somebody will ask to get it for 25 cents because a lot of people like to do that. Usually its the people who show up in nice cars too. :->

Good luck and hope this helps.

If you are happy with that price, why not. It isn't always what is the biggest price I might get. Shoppers will still bargain with you even if you have a set price. ie. if I buy 5 of them will you give me a reduced price.
If you have something you have to get a particular price for, stick to your guns. Dealers come early and want you to give them the stuff. If you really want to get rid of it, come down on your price later in the day.
Remember, if you are not happy selling something for less, don't sell it.

That sounds like a good deal, and you can probably count on old ladies coming to your garage, though if they don't you could easily get rid of patterns on ebay.

Instead of having a garage sale, have you considered selling your items on eBay? I sell items exactly like the ones you have and I do quite well. This is my store, if you'd like to check it out.

On the other hand, you could box them up and sell them to me :-)
