The gentleman credited with inventing the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell.

He installed the very first telephone connection in his office in Canada [I think Vancouver] and made a note in his diary..."installed the new telephone this morning. The blessed thing has not stopped ringing all day..." Know who to blame then?

Edit: thanks to DAVE P for adding the Italian gentleman also. I had not forgotten about him [can never remember his name] but do know that the telephone was not invented by Alexander Graham Bell but that he was the first to have one up and running - including a rudamentory telephone exchange etc.

Elisha Grey invented the telephone in 1876, independently of Alexander Graham Bell. Bell got to the Patent Office two hours before Grey, and so Bell is considered to be the inventor.

well, everyone thinks it is alexander bell because he managed to get the patent for it before anyone else. but in actual fact it is believed that an italien named antonio meucci invented it in 1849. then in 2001 US congress officially credited him with the invention of the telephone.
