It was the assignation of Arch Duke Fernidad that started the war, and the Austrian governments attack on Serbia that triggered the total war. The alliance with Germany was also a main cause the triggered WW1, and the decision to attack France that caused the entire fall to violence.

WW1 was the result of a lot of grievances and grumbles... but what finally triggered it was the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne... the assassin was was a serb. War was declared on Serbia which rallied for support all around and Austria followed suit. Austria was responsible in a way cos it blew the incident out of proportion and in the end millions of lives were sacrificed because one man was killed. There were other reasons for the war but this incident was the last straw that broke the camel's back. But u cant really hold Austria entirely responsible. There was a lot of tension brewing at the time.

Putting the blame for WW1 on Austria is a tad harsh. Regional conflicts in Bosnia and Austro-Hungarian region was a powder keg. Look into international alliances and collective/mutual defense agreements.

In essence, one country promised to defend the other and when A-H and Bosnia started the fight, all of the alliances took effect and then the real war began.
