If each snowball above is half the width as the one below, you could say the opposite that each snowball below is double the width of the one above.

So:
Top snowball - 6 in.
2nd top snowball - 6*2 = 12 in
3rd snowball - 12*2 = 24 in
Last snowball - 24* 2 = 48 in

The bottom snowball must be 48 inches, so it's C.

The answer is C. If the top snowball 6", each descending snowball is twice as large 12, 24, and 48.

The snowman is 48 inches wide.

Simply double the top snowballs six to get the third layers width...which would be 12, then double the twelve to get the 2nd layers width...24 and then double the 24 to get the base layer, which would be 48.

Reverse the wording, no good reason except it makes it just a bit easier to grasp, if you're teaching Grade 4
"4 snowballs, top=6 in.,width doubles as you go down to the ground.
Top=6
Next=12
Next=24
Bottom=48
C. 48 is the answer

because the top ball is only half of the snow ball below so 12 inches divided by 2 because top is one half it means that 6 is one half of 12..
