Hi SL,
I'll keep it simple.
Write a poem with any of the following for the title:
"The Name's Memory"
"A Variable Absence"
"It Was Me Who Gave You Gills"
"In Her Fading Dress"
"No Witness"
Do well.

When you're trying to decide a subject to write about, you need to ask yourself, "what do I see that I want to share with someone else?" Poetry is about communicating "your" vision to someone else...your perspective on something, your insight or a memory you want to share. You could look down and see a penny on the ground and write a dozen poems about it...how it got there, who dropped it, what they were doing when they dropped it, or what you would do with it if you picked it up, or why you didn't pick it up, or how the copper color of the penny reminded you of something in your past. You could write about an open door, how you wonder why the last person who went through it didn't close it, or what it represents to you...opportunity? a trap? the future?
You see, there are plenty of things to write about once you understand that you aren't writing about "a thing", you're writing about what you "see" in a thing, a situation, or a person....how you "feel" about it, them or it, or what it reminds you of or means to you. You could write about the sun coming through the windows, how the wind makes a child's hair blow into their ice cream...the subjects are endless because it has to do with your imagination and perspective.
If you write about "a thing", it will sound flat, contrived, and has probably been done to death by a thousand other poets. Keep it personal, keep it honest. Don't say how someone did you wrong or how you're upset with your life...that does nothing but make readers go on to the next poem...we've all had hardships, so show us something we don't know or haven't thought about..."your perspective" on things.
hope this helps

Even I write poems. It's cool. I think you should write about yourself or things you love. Or something that's bothering you.
As a poet, I write about everything that's on my mind.
Like for example, I wrote a poem recently saying thank you to my boyfriend and couple months ago I wrote one saying thank you to my brothers.
A few years ago I wrote one for my mother and one for my best friend. I even picture myself in situations and write about it.
For example "A Broken Heart". I also write about nature. One of the title was "THE RAIN"
You can go to www.poetry.com and view poems there. It'll help to give you an idea on what to write about.
My poems are there as well and you can even published yours.
Good Luck and keep on pursuing your artistic skills.
We all have one and we need to use it.
We need to show our talents.

Write about yourself. Years from now you can look back and have a good ideal of what you were thinking now.

I can't seem to get enough "dancing bee sucks" poems. If you're feeling ambitious, ask yourself, "What does he suck?" and try to answer the question thirteen different ways in your poem. How 'bout that? It's all about the process.
