I work for a walmart and I see a lot of theft. Just last friday we stopped over $1000.00 from getting out the store but we still had a lot of stuff still get by us. They steal dvd's, cd's, tv's, clothes, etc. It is rampant and is increasing. People know there is no punishment for shoplifting but there is a price at the checkouts we pay, there is a price we pay when these people escalate to breaking in our homes and cars, there is a price we pay when some often move up to assault and even murder. They had a person at a walmart just the other day that tried to stop a shoplifter and he was stabbed and died. We are taught at home and at school what is the difference of right and wrong. We are taught on childrens programs also. The thing is if the person starts at an early age and as you know nothing happens to kids when they get caught, then when they are an adult the damage is done and most of the time there is no turning back because since they turned 18 the record they had as a child is sealed. So as an adult they start all over again and the first, second, and third time nothing really happens to them so now the damage is done permantly. The solution to this is to fix the problem when they are a child. When I was 16 yrs old I stole from my grandfathers drug store. The first time was for over 10,000.00 worth of drugs. Nothing happened to me. I was sent to a hospital where I played pool, watched tv and had fun all the time. I was sent home for a weekend and I stole drugs again. This time for over 20,000.00. I was sent to a place where you had no rights. You had to wake up at 6am and eat breakfast. You went to school in the place until 12 noon. You then went to lunch. You then exercised or sawed loggs for hours. You could not laugh, use street talk, you were not there to have fun, you were there to be rehabilitated. You had to say yes sir, no sir, yes mam, no mam. This place was no picnic and I knew I did not want to go back. I spent a year there and have bben straight ever since. If they had not straightened me out I would be in prison today. I watch at my job as kids come in and steal and steal and steal. We have caught some over 20 times and they are still doing it. All they do is give them a small swat on the hand and wait til they turn to adults so they can go through the system several times until the system finally lets our tax dollars put them up in the crossbars hotel for years. Now they really learn how to be criminals and then our tax dollars really go to work again when they get out and we put them up in a halfway house and then we eventually put them back in prison for several years again. So if we had stopped this at an early age we could have changed someones life and that person could make a difference like I do today. All you have to do is make a site where people can sign electronically and then after you have 20 million signatures then you send it to the politicians stating that that if the laws are not changed then we will vote that person out of office and if the next one does not change the laws then we will vote that person out also. I dont know how to make such a site but if you want to do it I will join with you help make it possible. I will help spread the word and get as many people to sign up. One person cant make a difference but a group can make all the difference.

It is all part of the consequences of doing the crime. Most people don't need consequences to help them resist the lure of stealing. However, every person is tempted during hard times to look for an easier way out. Knowing that you will spend time in prison and will then face years of damage to your reputation is a strong factor in helping people resist.
Unfortunately, people that choose that type of lifestyle, even though they are aware of the consequences, ultimately deserve what they get.
There are many people that will help those people when they get out of prison, but they must be willing and able to set there old ways behind them and struggle through the repair of their life and reputation. It can take a while, and, it will be challenging, but anyone that truly wants to recover from the damage can. Or, they can sit back and blame everyone else for holding them back and never get out of the hole they dug for themselves.

there are many programs available to help released prisoners transition back into society and be successful.
problem lies with individual
if the person would have sought and received help in the beginning of the hard times, before he committed the crime he would most likely have avoided imprisonment, probation, etc.
of course, too many individuals don't seek or utilize the helpful resources that are available, they rely on too many available excuses instead.
the programs work for those who accept responsibility, the programs don't work for those who accept excuses

Society has to protect vulnerable people from criminals - hense Criminal record checks. Would you like a fraudster looking after money or old people? No, but there are other jobs that are worthwhile and valued. Once they prove they are on the straight and narrow, they will have rearned Society's trust.

Unfortunately, that's the way it works. And it's alot worse now than 20 yrs ago, because everything you do now has a criminal record check, or a personal credit check(so places won't hire you if you owe alot of money)

Then that person should have thought long and hard about the long reaching consequences of their action BEFORE choosing to commit a crime.
Do the criminals ever think of their victims??
