I'm trying out for a school production this week (it's The Nightmare Before Christmas) and I'm going to audition for the part of Sally. I've never acted before in my life or been in a serious school play/musical. I really, really want this part though. What are some good tips for someone like me?

its actually better if you have no expierence...you havent had the chance to pick up bad habits before the audition pretend you are sally, see how she would react in different situations act like her around the house...trust me it works

Since you're trying out for a character that you can see in another setting, you can get some background information on her, like the movie. Research her, and maybe for a few days, try to act like her - just drop into her character. Dress like her, talk like her, etc. For Final Destination 3, Alexz Johnson did that - she dressed like Erin, just got completely into her mindset. If you've never acted before, don't worry - if you know what you're doing, and at least act completely confident, you'll be fine. Just be yourself when you're not acting, and the character when you are! If it's a school production, they give everyone a fair chance, no matter if they've acted before or not.
I think you'll be fine - just get into her mindset, and maybe even audition for a few parts, although keeping that one foremost in your mind. At least then you'll have an even better chance of being in the play, even if you don't get the one you wanted most. Then they may remember you next time there's a production.
Hope you get the part! And good luck!

Be yourself. Most directors don't want their actors to try and model themselves after the character they are auditioning for. They want your interpretation of the character.

Most of all, just relax. If you don't get the part it's not the end of the world. You can always try again someother time.

Good luck!
