I'd say, they don't have much respect, and therefore have no concept of consequences. If they had a sense of responsibility, they might have an awareness of the fact that their actions cause reactions, and there may not always be mummy and daddy to bail them out of their mess.

That WOULD be a VERY fair statement! For instance, when I was at school, there was the fear of the "belt" - MOST pupils behaved better just to avoid it! Even the Law doesn't scare them - they can outrun the Polis any day! Seriously, there are no deterrents, so some kids push to the limit - and usually get away with petty crimes etc. Bring back Borstal or the like - that'll soon sort the wee buggers out!

I work with young offenders from some of the worst estates in North East England, believe you me they know how to be afraid.

Afraid of domestic violence in thier homes, afraid of their estate environment and the violence in it, afraid of the future, afraid of their inability to rationalise it all. Because they refuse to cower in the face of this fear does not mean they do not feel it.Its part of their lives, minute by minute, fight or flight response permanently switched on.

Even the most seemingly hardened of them are afraid, its just dangerous to show it, it attracts unwanted attention to be the weak one in the herd.

We never grew up on estates like they do, i am from a rough estate but they werent the same even 20 years ago, let alone 40

If you talking about young crims, yes. The civilised society got so soft and impotent on kids /due to women in politics/ , they play fearless hero in any situations.
It is time for tough new laws to hold parents fully responsible for all baddoings of their offsprings. And give the parents and the teachers back their power to punish bad kids.

If you were to see my 11 year olds reaction when he sees a spider, you would not think that!

I think they're still afraid - but of different things. Life moves on.

No sense of fear is part of being a kid. A sense of danger can only be taught by the parents and by experiences.
