x = [5 ±√(25 - 20)] / 10
x = [ 5 ± √(5) ] / 10

First split the 5x2 up. So make it 5x X 5x, because thats what a square is. Leave that for now. Take the 1 and bring it over to the zero. Since you are switching sides, you change its symbol from a plus to a minus. So now we have the following:
5x X 5x -5x = (-1).
Now, 5x X 5x equals 25x. You just multiply the 5s. 25x - 5x equals 20x. Therefore, 20x = (-1). Then 20 divided by negative one, which equals -20. So x = -20. If this explanation went way over your head, let me know, and I can clarify.

5x² - 5x + 1 = 0
Normally you can factor the eqution to find what 2 numbers have a product of, in this case, 5 and add up to 5, and there aren't any here.

Since this equation does not factor easily then use the quadratic formula:

.............-b±√(b²-4ac)
x = -------------------------------------
.................2a

a = 5
b = -5
c = 1

x = (5+√5)/2
x = (5-√5)/2
