I'm from Australia and as soon as you turn 18 you must enrole to vote and voting is compulsory. If you dont it's a $30,000 fine.

Shy Girl let me correct myself It's a $30,000 fine if you do not enroll to vote, I know this because a friend was not enrolled and that is the amount he was fined.

In the US it's not compulsory. In fact, less than a third of the people eligible register, and usually less than half of those actually vote. In an effort to change this, the governments have changed laws making it easier to register and vote. You can now register at other government places, like the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, (Where you get a driver's license and register your car.) when before you had to make a special trip to a certain office. You can get a ballot, and all the instructions, in Spanish and Braille, and request a translator for other languages, when before you had to have a friend or relative who could help. You can cast your ballot by mail if you're sick or disabled, in some places even on line. So, it's getting better, but it should be much better. You can force people to vote, but you can't force them to care about the social issues around them, which is where, I'm sure, we'd all like our societies to go.

$30,000?!? Are you sure about that?! Being in the States, I wasn't able to find a place where I could vote for the Federal Election and I got a fine of $75.00...
Where on Earth did you come up with the $30,000 figure?
I've been gone for five years and quite frankly, I'm shocked at you just said.
BTW, in America, it's not compulsory and I can't vote anyway, as I'm not a citizen.....I only have permanent residency at this point.
ADD: Jeff A.....The reason it's compulsory in Australia, is because we only have a population of 21,000,000 people. If we didn't have to vote, nobody would! Our country simply doesn't have the population that your country does.

Only Australian citizens who have enrolled to vote. So if you are an Australian citizen and have enrolled to vote and are overseas, then certainly, it is compulsory for you to vote otherwise you will have to pay a fine. Remember, there are many Australian citizens living in Australia who haven't enrolled to vote and thus don't get penalised if they don't vote.

If you have to threaten or bribe people to vote, they probably aren't well-informed enough to cast a meaningful ballot. Why don't we leave voting to people who care enough to do it voluntarily?
