People say to gargle with warm salt water when you have a sore throat. I understand why this is a good idea if you have a bacterial infection, but does it help viral infections, too?

Nathan's aswer is totally backwards. Antibiotics kill bacteria but not viruses. Warm salt water will kill bacteria that is on the surface of your skin. Viruses are inside your cells and aren't much hurt by the salt water.

No if you get a virus, you need antibiotic to fight it. or it will spread inside the body....your natural body defense system will work hard to fight it, but since it will work so hard at it, your body will need a lot of fuel (food) and rest. Antibiotic will really help ease your body and fight the viro more affectively.
