By the time that HBK hurt his back(almost a career ending injury) at a Casket match against The Undertaker(i think at the Royal Rumble 1998).Then HBK lost the title to Austin at WM14 and then made sporadic appearences to the WWF/WWE until 2002 where he returned in full season contract.I think that this injury helped HHH to climb the spotlight cause before this he was as a brother and bodyguard to Shawn Michaels.
HBK won the WWF title and was the Showstopper and the main eventer. On the other side HHH was a mid-carder and challenging for the European title...

Well really he had 3 turning points, obviously the first when he signed with WWE, the second when he stopped being Hunter Hearst Helmsley and just became Triple H in DX, and thirdly when Shawn Michaels got injured and the main eventer role in DX was passed down to The Game.

Until he joined HBK and they formed DX nobody really paid attention to Triple H. It was HBK, Triple H, Rick Rude, and China. That really boosted his career.
However, the biggest turning point was the night after HBK lost the title to Austin. Triple H took total control of DX and the rest is history.

as the number 1, triple h fan in the world, i would say that his turning point was when HBK drop the ball..
he formed his own DX army and rising to main event status instantly, but it doesnt end there, when he betrayed DX and joined the corporation, he was that damn good and when he came back from injury way back in 2002, he's the cerebral assasin.. winning the rumble and wrestlemania to become the undisputed champ..
he's the game and he makes the rules!
when he used evolution and kicked their asses with a sledgehammer, his the king of kings!!!
there's only one!!!

WHEN HE married Stephanie McMahon!(non kayfabe) Now he pretty much controls what goes on! That's why Orton's first title reign was so short! HHH vetoed Orton's push and will probably do it again!
