In a circle you would never meet yourself coming back!
Off on a tangent you could possibly have to backtrack!.....hmmmm

All depends if the circles will end in the same place (a true circle) or if there is a way out after the lesson is learned (e.g. Israel during Exodus).
Tangents are exciting but rarely have good thought behind them therefore their destination, while exciting, often leads to backtracking unless you are a true wanderer and don't care where you are going. BTW that is a pretty good definition of a sociopath.

If you continually go in circles you will eventually catch up to yourself and disappear up your own rectum.
It is better to straighten out and follow a goal once in a while.
You can always go back to the ' Great Circle Route ' , but it becomes so mundane after a while.
Some Eastern Religions believe that life is a circle with no beginning nor end, but that doesn't mean that you can't branch out once in a while.

Interesting question, Shazam. It is better to live one's life in a predictable manner in a safe course, so either going in circles or going off on a tangent could both qualify in this regard. If you go in circles, provided that events and life's meetings with people change, the only thing you do is adjust your behavior and life according to the microcosm of the world you chose to stay in.
If you go off tangent, there has got to be a very legitimate reason, such as toxic environment or the need to establish yourself firmly and independently. When one goes off tangent, there ought to be a good purpose and plan of what one is going to accomplish in this life.
I appreciate questions such as yours since it allows various interpretations. Remember that if you decide to go off tangent, you may always return to the fold. May I repeat, it is better to live a predictable, safe life and minimize distresses that bear burdens. best wishes.
