FARMINGTON, Maine - A 65-year-old woman who went into a Farmington supermarket to buy wine was turned away because she didn't have an ID with her. But Skapa of Mount Vernon says that won't happen again. "I'll be bringing my driver's license with me from now on," Skapa said.

A spokeswoman for the supermarket chain, R. Howes, said Hannaford's new policy is to check IDs of anyone who looks under 45 and wants to buy alcohol. The previous policy was to check for proof of age of those who look younger than 30.

My Comment:

65 being carded for looking 45!!??

Because Maine is doing Alcohol Stings, this is actually a good thing the cashier did! Might of been horriblly embarrassing for all involved, but, I have a friend who was FIRED for selling to someone the state had dressed up as a 50-ish yr old person. How is one to tell that the 'makeup' is FAKE??

My friend has to pay a fine, $1500 !! As does the store she'd worked at for 4 or more years!

Rediculous!

You mistook my "rediculous" comment...

It's more towards our wonderful state of Maine -- It is rediculous for them to hold these stings, making 16 yr olds look 50-ish yrs old.

I was a cashier once, and I carded EVERYONE - even my mom (mostly to laugh at her pic) .. And for the ones that got mad, I explained that if I didn't card them, and they ended up being a child dressed up to be older - I would be paying a fine, I can't afford, and losing a job I need.

After that, they were fine being carded by me.

While I agree that this may seem rediculous, I believe if EVERYONE is carded, the employee and the store isn't held liable. I'm in my early thirties and get carded for Lottery tickets. It's a hassle, but one that I can deal with.

If the store has a policy of seeing ID if you don't look 45, then it is up to the clerk to decide. Many 65 year olds have plastic surgery, wear wigs or dye their hair in an attempt to look younger.
I don't see anything wrong with what the clerk did and it sure isn't national news.

Well I do have to agree it seems very ridicules to card anyone of that age..Common sense should tell them the person is clearly of age... But on the other side of things..That is great that a woman of 65 looks that young still. I am 61 and have been told many many times I look like I am in my 40s.

it particularly is dazzling that a *rape case* related to an 8 12 months previous and a pair of ten 12 months previous boys might make it to courtroom given the actual impossibility of a *rape* in the 1st place. it is likewise unsettling that the girl grow to be suggested by ability of the choose that she had carried out no longer something in any admire incorrect and to no longer forget approximately that. ??? by way of fact while is fake accusation of rape an ok situation to do? There *might* be mitigating/worrying circumstances (w/e way you go with to look at it) - (maybe) - yet particularly - at this point how does the choose incredibly comprehend that she did *no longer something incorrect* provided that 2 harmless teenagers have been dragged by way of an quite public judicial technique - and are nonetheless dealing with it by way of fact the trial maintains - inspite of the girls recantation.

Some stores have adopted the policy to card everyone regardless if they appear to be of age. This is to avoid the appearance of discrimination.

I think it is ridiculous, but many states require them to check all ages, whether they are 102!
