This thing about things being kamp or kish, or really ugly, so ugly it's beutyfull. I hate the film The Yellow Brick Road with Judy Garland. I think it's kish, camp, gordy and horribly pretencious. I've told friends what I think about the film and they've agreed but said "that's what's so wonderful about it." I really, honestly don't understand that. I think it's to do with fadishness???

Maybe a better question would be to ask yourself why you think it is that this film evoked such a visceral response from you....I've seen that film a million times over the years with great indifference (except when I was really young and was frightened by the flying monkeys), and while I agree with your points about the film it's never struck so deep a chord with me as it has with you. I wonder why? I can relate; there was a film years ago that won an Academy Award and everyone thought it was great: all-star cast, solid acting, a compelling story (by all accounts)....but for some reason, I hated it, almost irrationally so, and I wanted to discuss it with anyone and everyone who would listen. The movie was "Terms of Endearment" and so far I haven't met anyone else on planet earth who was offended by this film....nor have I been able to adequately explain to folks why the movie bothers me so much, so I wonder what it is in me that makes that movie resonate so negatively for me. It is an interesting question, and I am somewhat relieved to see that it happens to other people too. Thanks for the insight.

Not at all. Saturday evenings a program on tv comes on that I watch. WORST horror films. My friends and family do not understand my absolute fascination with these films, because, as the title proclaims, they are awful! It is quite simple for me to explain: Once upon a time when I was a child, these same films used to scare the woo hoo from me. It takes me back to an age of innocence when all is believable... I try to watch these films through the mind of a child and yes, I still get some of the same awe and surprise, although a bit dampened now. By the way, I still watch the Wizard of Oz also starring Judy Garland and enjoy every moment.

There are times to throw off the critics hat and just enjoy for the sake of enjoyment. Even my children are learning this valuable lesson when they grace me with their presence on Bad Film night. What used to be "how gay" now is just a night we all get to hang out and watch mom's weird movies.

I am also fascinated with other black and white films from an era that relied on acting rather than special effects. Yes, they do tend to over due the drama, but I love it anyway!

If you hate something then you hate it. Not everyone will agree with you. Beauty is afterall, in the beholder's eye.

When it was made all those years ago it was a groundbreaking film. My dad says he went to the cinema and saw it and the whole audience stood up and clapped when it changed from black and white to colour. I think that is why it is hailed as such a wonderful film.
It has stood the test of time too as My kids love it.
