You may need to reinstall the driver for the sound card. This is a common case where Windows could not find or does not have the driver for particular hardware. You may find the driver from the install CD or download from the PC manufacturer.

I am sorry but I only saw your question now 11 hours later but better late than never. This is how to go about it.
First place your system disk in the drive and stop it from loading,
Go to Start / Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / Sound Video and Game Controllers / Audio Codecs right click and update drivers.
Scroll to System Devices and do the same on anything relating to sound.
PS If you ever have a problem that is how it's done no matter what goes wrong. Graphics etc, etc. If their is a better driver available it will search the web other wise it will find the driver on the system disk.

Install the motherboard driver included in the box. But this is an on board sound media, after installing you should hear a sound on start up.
Or maybe you have a sound card, which needed a driver, that you can find on its box also. Install this and restart the system, you should hear a sound. Be sure to insert the speaker on correct slot (color coded).
You may isolate the problem if error persist. You can first go to control panel ->sound and audio devices->sound and audio devices, if you're installation is correct you can manipulate the audio tab (no greyed part). If this is the case, there might be a problem with your connection.

You are missing your sound drivers, this is quite common after reinstalling Windows. Your computer manufacturer probably has a website and most have a download section where you can download drivers for your computer.

I did this, I'd formatted it and re-installed windows and amongst other problems I couldn't get any sound.
I solved problem with the re-boot disk, that restores it to factory settings.
