If it came to that I guess they would have to - innocent or guilty. They would only be extradited if they tried to avoid it. Why would anyone delay the inevitable and make things worse for themselves ie. refusal of bail etc.?

Well let's look at recent events. Up till recently, they were both adjudged to be witnesses. After the blood samples were analysed, they were both questioned and have now become suspects. During all this time (and indeed before), they have said that they will stay in Portugal until the disappearance of Maddie is solved. Now, when an arrest seems imminent, they've suddenly returned to England where it would be necessary for the Portuguese authorities to instigate extradition proceedings should they decide to make an arrest.
So, taking all of the above points into account, the answer is an emphatic "NO!"

Of course not, especially if I knew I was innocent and would gain nothing by going back except to be thrown into the slammer. Being dumped into a jail just on grounds of suspicion would serve no purpose; the fact is the Portuguese police have no clue and need a scapegoat, and the only possible one they have now is the parents. At a point these things become political, such as the neeed to produce results to justify next fiscal year budget increase requests, and it may be the police are simply in the process of asking for more money for operating expenses and need to show they can perform. So in a situation like this the parents become nothing more than pawns in an unrelated political game.
Sooner or later it all comes down to the money; it always does. Always.

Assuming A) I was innocent and B) I had been subjected to a harsh interrogation in which fabricated evidence was used to threaten and bully me into making a confession, no I would not risk placing myself in the hands of an incompetent and unjust police service.

If it were me, I'd try to do the 'right thing' but also it would depend very much what the penalty for not returning might be. Don't know about them though..
