That's what is supposed to happen when you read a book! It means that you are actually enjoying it and comprehending it. It is a sign of intelligence! Nothing to fret over. You are gifted!

No, in fact, I have built my house out of old library books. I hide in there everyday and don't let anyone in. My book house has no windows or doors. There is only one secret passage way in and I am the only one who knows about it. The other day I was bored so, I decided to read a novel. Now, I have to rebuild the entire house because the book I chose was a foundation footing. Oh well, maybe this time I will read a book on how to construct a home.

Yeah it is normal.
You just have an extremely over-active imagination. I am also guessing you feel lonely and depressed.
Lonely and Depressed people try to take over a whole new life, mostly based on comic book characters. Books take your mind of your troubles and give you something to be happy about. They give you a world different and far away from your own. A place where you feel comfortable among charactersthat feel very much like you.

The "escape" mentality of this type is a very common reason why many people bother to read at all. It is not detrimental unless you ALLOW it to be. The word "NORMAL" is the worlds greatest misnomer. By "identifying" with characters in books we can make our reading experience more enjoyable. If you are very susceptible to becoming overly empathetic with undesirable characters,,,,maybe you need to be more careful about what you choose to read. Life is NOT too much to take. Life is the greatest gift of the cosmos.

whenever i read a book i get very caught up and end up reading for hours without realising. maybe you feel that you want some excitment and wish to live like someone else out of interest.
but you need to remember that some of the books are ficitional. try and take control and read books that contain happy messages so you dont start feel stressed.

Apart from the last 10 words I loved your description. I feel the same. I think that those of us with the ability to move so utterly into other worlds are exceptionally lucky. We can travel all over the world, and all over time for the cost of a paperback! I think its a gift.
However, I ma sad that you feel that life is too much. Books are amazing, but we all need people too.

It's a way to get away from reality. A good book is usually good for evoking good and wildly passionate emotions.
If the problem gets too serious, it's probably your life problems that is getting you down. If this is the case, no matter how much reading you do, you won't escape the reality you are in.
Nevertheless, reading in such a way can be a good way to encapsulate yourself in when things do get too much to handle.

Books are meant to be a sort of "alternate reality"...but do be careful to remember that it isn't *your* reality. Getting drawn in too far, can lead to dissociating, which is not good (I speak from experience).
Is your daily life that unpleasant? Maybe you should work on making a few changes, or getting some counselling to deal with the bad situations you can't change yourself.
Books can be good "friends"--just make sure you have real friends, too.

Just watch what kind of books you reading.
When I read a book I too feel like the book hero. But my hero /and then my ego/ is full of energy and motivated to do exciting "life" things.
Is "real life" going to the movies?
Then what diff is there between reading a book?

I sort of understand where you are coming from. We live in an unfair world and sometimes one needs to find somewhere to retreat from it and in your case its the book. The reason you do this, is you can control what is happening when you are reading, but you cannot control what is happening in the outside world or real life.
