As I said she is breast fed exclusively. She is eleven days old. Is this a sign of constipation, or is it normal for the stool to get darker?

It's normal. As long as she's nursing plenty she's fine! Congrats and great work making it 11 days. The first part is the hardest!

Hah, some of these answers are just HILARIOUS!!

First of all, the dark, tarry meconium that your baby passes after birth has already passed....and I assume you are not referring to anything of that consistency.

Secondly, you never mentioned that you were introducing solids at all so I'm not sure where that pp got the idea that this is from rice cereal.

That said, as you say you're exclusively breastfeeding, thats wonderful! :-)
Througout breasyfeeding, babies stool can and will change color and consistency, for various reasons.
-Green/Frothy Poop can be a sign of Foremilk-Hindmilk imbalance. All you need to do is let baby nurse longer from one breast before switching sides....this will ensure adequate Hindmilk intake
-Green/Brownish *could* be from a new food or medication that the Mom is taking. It could also just be your baby's digestive system changing and adjusting. At any rate, check with your Family Doctor...BUT, DO NOT let anyone tell you to restrict nursing. Unless your on Chemo or anti-HIV drugs, this is RARELY necessary.

The MOST important factors here are:

-is baby happy, content?
-nursing frequently (at least 8-12 times in 24hrs)
-6-8 wet diapers a day (you can make this easier to guess by putting a tissue inside your babys diaper...most disposables these days absorb so well you can hardly tell if they've peed)

It's definately not a sign of constipation. Breastfed babies are almost never constipated. Breastmilk is a natural laxative, which is why their poop is so much more "runny* then a Formulafed Infants.
It's also very easily digested which is why they want to eat so much more.

Dark Yellow Stool

Whatever you eat goes thru your breast milk. You have to go back and try to remember what it was that you ate that was green or brown. It is very normal for your daughter to have stools like that. There are certain foods you are not to eat while breast feeding as it will distress the baby. By distress I mean give the baby gas. Nothing like a gassy baby to deal with all day long, it can be stressful. Watch what you eat and know that your baby is getting the same thing that you ate. CONGRATULATIONS on your new little daughter. Good Luck !!

That's fine! The yellow poo is a good sign but remember whatever you eat comes through to your breastmilk and into her bowels. Think back to what you ate in the 24-36hrs before she did that poo.
If it continues or gets hard or lumpy then I would worry, if it goes back to mustard yellow and runny'ish then don't stress. Also a newborn may only poo every 1-4 days which is also normal and it shouldn't really smell either.
If in doubt ring your local child health nurse of doctor for reasurance.

Best of luck and congrats on your new addition!!

The infant will have dark stools for a week or ten days after that it has to be normal. It is not a sign of constipation.

It is completely normal for the stool to change color.

Don't be frightened by the color changes of BMs. In normal infants, BMs change color as the baby's diet changes, as the digestive tract matures, and as it is populated by new, normal bacteria. It's rare that color changes signal a digestive problem. Usually color changes just mean that there is more or less of the yellow/green/brown/orange pigments that are picked up along the way.

the poo color will change a few different colours while u breastfeed
my bubs had days where it was orange, or green, or brown
it must b what we eat, and their digestion changing and maturing too, sometimes it will look bubbly and a bit frothy, sometimes seedy, sometimes mucousy, some times dark bits in it

u will see alot of changes and thats all b4 solids start!
the only thing that would ever concern u is if there was blood in it, take care, xxxxxxxxxxxx

A baby's bowel movements will change once solids are added to her diet. They may become more firm and have a less pleasant odor than the exclusively breastfed baby's stools.

Green stools in a healthy baby may indicate a sensitivity/allergy to a medication or a food. Since your little one's change in stooling seemed to corresponded with the addition of rice cereal to her diet, you might want to return to an exclusively breastmilk diet for a few weeks and see if her stools remain green. Her digestive system may not be quite ready for solids - a few weeks might make a difference.
