1) Yes, you can use etherent and make a "mini-lan" (network between the 2 PC's to share files... If you use a hub or router, then the 2 PC's can be attached with normal ethernet cables to that device. If using a single cable between the 2 PC's, you will need a special ethernet cable called a "crossover cable" to make the connection. Windows will auto assign TCP/IP addresses for the PC's, but you will need to "turn-on" file sharing and unblock the firewall to allow access across the LAN.

2) You can remove the hard drive from the old PC and get a USB adapter to attach the old drive to the new PC to transfer the files. This is probably the easiest for an inexperienced user.

3) You can use intermediate storage (like burn a CD/DVD, floppy, etc.) on the old PC to get the data off and readable for the new PC. This is limited to devices that exist on both PC's and storage capacity of the intermediate device.

4) You should know what files you might need to transfer... If unsure, then yes, you could inadvertently transfer a virus in the process. Also, when using method 1, since both machines have Windows running, if an active virus is running on the old machine it might try to propogate over the network it finds!

I'd suggest using a flash drive. That's how I switched from my desktop to my laptop and it went quick and easy. There's not network to setup and it only takes a second to figure out how to use it. If you want, let me know and I'll give you step by step instructions on how to do it.
