sometimes you can hear that the pump is louder than normal when you turn the key ahead(if its dead not hear it at all ) with out actually starting the car.(turn it back after listening).Definitely you should have it checked out if in doubt, you don't want to be stranded, have to pay for a tow and possibly get stuck with a mechanic you wouldn't normally choose.Pressure check will tell ,although they might have tohave the pump taken out anyways to check it.That means dropping the gas tank which also means, the possibility of needing a new tank if you have an older vehicle. If you live in an area where they are ladling the roads with Calcium Chloride(brine) in the winter it can be costly, very costly .Depending on the vehicle pumps can cost as much as 1000$.And even if you get them straight from the factory only 10,000miles or 90 days warranty. If you have been starting and stalling, no power,it could be as simple as plugs(fouled) dirty fuel filters, water in the gas.

You need to make 2 basic checks, pressure and volume. depending on the make and model of your car and the type of fuel system will determine what the results should be. Not a do it your self, driveway repair. Find a good mechanic, preferably a factory trained mechanic, which would indicate your best choice is a dealership. It might cost more per hour but total cost, along with proper repair and factory parts pays off in the long run.
