If you're using a manufacturers "recovery CD" make sure you've copied all your files to CD / USB keys / other machines first (BACKUP TIME)
Insert CD, and follow instruction it came with (usually pretty automatic)
If you are using a "real" windows disc Iæd suggest reading up at www.windowsreinstall.com for guidance

well w/o either an operating system disk or a Recovery disk you will be unable to do so. You will need to get ahold of one of these. If you get an O.S. disk or a Recovery CD you are going to incert the cd restart the computer and as soon as it restarts keep hitting the f10 key till it pops up w/ a screen either 1) asking you to choose a boot media (if so select cd rom) or 2) will say hit any key to boot from Cd ( in this case hit any key!) Then you will follow the on screen prompts as to what you need to do. You will get to an option that will ask you to format the drive, make sure you do so and use the NTFS format (quick version) and then you will go from there.

OOoo.. That is a dangerous question. If you do not have your Windows operating system disks do not format until you have them in hand. If you have them boot with your window install or restore disk. It will give you the option to install windows, and windows will format your hard drive prior to a clean install.
It would help if you listed the make of your computer along with the model number, and long with which operating system you currently have installed.

if you could post the make and model of your laptop it would help.
as you may have a hidden partion that will roll your laptop back to the day you first used it.
on my acer its alt+F10 at the start and only takes ten mins.from disk it can take ages...
if you have a hidden partion you may be asked to burn a recovery disk. i recommend you do this as soon as possible.as this will help with major crashes.
