Scozbo - the question is how can you distinguish between them, not what their molecular structure it.

Molecular weight, vapor pressure or density.

1-butyne is 8 C
2- butyne is 27 C
If you have a container with a gas valve then you have the 1-isomer. If you have a bottle with a liquid then it is the 2 isomer.

2-butyne has a triple bond between the second and third carbon atoms.
