bargain. Why?
The Portuguese police had any real evidence to go on, they would have charged them both by now. They have given them no restrictions on bail and they are no closer to bringing any charges about. IF, they did, then why have they offered Kate a deal? "Tell us that you had something to do with the disappearance (not murder) of your daughter and you'll only do two years". They don't know anything. The Portuguese police are no closer to finding out what has happened to Maddie as they wouldn't be bargaining if they did. They are in the limelight just as much as the McCanns and they know this. Why do you think they have made them suspects? It's to stop them talking to the press. This is one of the conditions of being a formal suspect. The McCanns have shown their doubts about the skills of the Portuguese police and this stops them telling the press their doubts. They are free to leave the country if they wish? The police don't have any ideas about this.

Retox - There are no bail restrictions on them at all. They can pack up today and leave the country if they wish. Does that sound like the police have any real evidence to you? You wouldn't let your main suspects leave the country if you throught they had done it. If they do leave the country the police then have to go through the procedures of extraditing them back to Portugal. Come on, be sensible about this.

Theres certainly something not right. I think the plea bargaining thing has been discounted now. I dont know whats going on and will wait for more information but in the words of Team McCann the whole thing is 'LUDICROUS'!

The whole thing makes me sick. Who in their right mind would have gone out and left three young children alone. They are an intelligent couple obviously, and yet had no concern for their infants. Why?
It is an awful thing to happen but no matter what, they left them alone, and quite frankly I consider it amazing that they only had one child taken. Does no one wonder how the two remaining children feel. Their older sister has gone missing maybe dead, and their parents only think about the implications of them being suspected.
Also why hire a car five weeks after the incident? Even if they are not guilty in anyway of her disappearance, they are guilty of going out without providing any childcare. Why do that? Did they not have enough money to provide a sitter? If so money did not come into the equation for their few hours out.
I would say guilty or not, they will and should suffer the thought of having left her, and the other two young children alone. That will be on their consciences forever. There is no excuse genuine or good enough to qualify them for having done that. Now they have the rest of their lives to accept the fact that, they preferred to leave them alone and go out with some holiday acquaintances for a laugh. Checking in now and again just was not good enough. I know it is a bit of the horse has bolted. But, in all honesty I personally could not have sat there having food and drink in a foreign or otherwise country knowing all the implications of the consequences involved.
There are far too many preverted people out there as we all know. Plenty more also, who are prepared to do anything for a bit of extra cash. Out of these people, if you can call them that, they are all brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers to somebody. So really ask yourself, is it any wonder the police are now finally begining to wonder if they are looking for somebody who is not there? Also considering they only brought the McCanns in now after having received the forenzic report on the blood in the hire car. Which I would doubt very much was planted by the police. There is far too much publicity involved now in this case.

Oh, I think the Portuguese now plenty. Don't forget, there are more test results to follow. Both parents are now formal suspects - based on DNA evidence. It is hard to accept for the McCann supporters but this is fact. Luckily, Portugal is a Sovereign State and the British cannot interfere in their police procedures. Whether we like it or not, the Portuguese will do it their way and rightly so. The crime was committed in Portugal.
EDIT: Thanks for the additional comments but the net is closing in. The Portuguese police are doing background checks on the McCanns - investigations as to what the McCanns are like, the state of their marriage, how the treated their children etc etc. The net is closing - it must be terribly disappointing for the people who had such blind faith in them and probably a little embarrassing. Yes, they are free to leave the country but let's be honest, it wouldn't look that good on the Mccanns would it?

I don't think you can say there is no evidence, the secrecy laws mean they can't talk about the investigation, instead they leak stories to the press. The question is whether it is sufficient for them to prosecute them. If what has appeared in the press is true Cadaver dogs picked up the scent of a dead body in the apartment and on the car. They have also found samples of blood in the apartment and in the car.

Of course there wouldn't be a direct quote if they offered a deal. I'm not saying they did offer a deal, but if it was rejected there wouldn't be any reason to confirm it.

I agree. I think the Portuguese police are desperate to come to a conclusion and put an end to this case. They know that the world's completely focused on them and well let's be honest we all know that the McCanns were right to have their doubts about the Portuguese police (whether they're guilty or innocent) because they don't seem to know what they're doing. As you mentioned if they have solid evidence why are they offering Kate a bargain???

Well the Police think that Kate and Gerry McCann could have something to do with the dissappearence of their missing daughter.- Madeleine, so they are trying to recieve a confession. If they do have something to do with Maddie's disappearence, then a confession is the only way they'll find her at this rate.

I agree, even though I have dropped all support I had for the McCanns, if the Portuguese Police had the evidence that they say they have, they would be charging them with murder or manslaughter, not offering plea bargains, and the McCanns certainly wouldn't be free on unconditional bail. My opinion is they have nothing or very little.

there are lots of things about this case which are baffling to the average man in the street ..i personally i don't think the MC canns had anything to do with the child's disappearance ,,although they are guilty of making the biggest mistake of all times by leaving 3 children alone ..that is unforgivable..but just suppose they did harm Maddy ..how could they keep the body hid ..it would deteriorate ..and after 28 days the blood would be solid ..and they are under observation at all times ..but their innocence could be proved by a lie detector test or one of those truth drug test ..but until i know different then i will give them the benefit of the doubt

The Police are using tactics to make them disclose the Truth. I for one do not like or trust the Portuguese Police. Are they misconstruing the analyzed evidence and could this reflect on The British Police ?

Portugal-based British journalist Paul Luckman told the BBC that under Portuguese law there is a set sentence for each crime which not even a judge can change.
He said it would be simply not possible for the police to make such a deal.
