This is my second attempt at answering your question...
Initially I didn't read it properly .. and started writing a post defending many of the Americans I have come to know on-line... AND then I re-read your question and I realised that you weren't attacking my american friends .. BUT Those who are BLINDLY patriotic.... and who possess over over-inflated opinions of themselves and their nation........
I am glad to say that MOST of the Americans I have chanced upon on the internet are decent, kind and thinking people.. who while even being proud to be Americans DO NOT FEEL THE NEED TO INSULT OTHERS...AND who recognise each nation has it's merrits and demerrits.
EDIT: addressing PaulyDragon .. HEY and us aussie women are rugged and witty TOO .. don't give all the blokes the best allocades ;)
EDIT # 2 kristycordeaux OH PLEASE... for goodness sake .. can't you come up with SOMETHING original .. YOU GUYS DID NOT WIN THE WAR... WE ALL WON THE WAR ... don't insult the allies who fought side by side with your guys in ORDER to WIN THE WAR .. and YOU are the PERFECT example of why so many NON-AMERICANS think america is crap,
EDIT# 3 Mr. US of A, Baby! ./.. and what are you offering to buy people candy ... you some sort of paedophile ?????

Vin, sounds like you have been copping a bit of flak from undereducated, rednecked, slackjawed seppos, and have lashed out in quite a general fashion.
True, the bushpig was elected by a majority of Americans, however I don't think you were trying to tar the whole nation with the same brush with your question. If I can believe what I read, the majority was very slim, and in his first term that majority was very questionable.
I'm not sure that MOST Americans think we are dumb. I reckon you're probably right to say that there are a very large proportion of uneducated ignorant Americans that do. That number seems HUGE because they have such a big population compared to ours.
I am sure that the vast majority of Americans are good, honest and caring people, who have to live under the direction of possibly one of the worst Presidents in their history.
I think we should be careful about saying that all Americans are crap or dumb, just because the bushpig is
EDIT Mike b: Where exactly IS the US fighting terrorism? I hope you are not referring to Iraq. 750,000 people dead now and for what? They never got OBL, never found any WMD's, all they have done is killed thousands and thousands of people who have never even heard of the Twin Towers. You are one of the Americans that Vin refers to.
kristycordeaux: Where are you going with that dumb statement? The US sat watching a war where a REAL enemy were commiting REAL atrocities, and sat around doing nothing until Pearl Harbour was bombed. Only concerned about their own asses!
Speaking about American asses, should we discuss how many we saved in Vietnam? Or is that cutting a little close to the bone again, talking about pointless wars?

It merely sounds like you're trying to get a rise out of people, simply for the sake of getting a rise out of people (yep, I've done that before).
Instead of coming across like that whiny old bag Andy Rooney on "60 Minutes", why not break down and streamline that which really concerns you?
Just a thought---I intensely dislike the way my country's going these past few years, but at the same time it makes little sense to gripe and moan simply for the sake of griping and moaning.
And as an American---I think Australians are cool. Your men are generally rugged and witty, your women are some of the most beautiful women in the world, and your food, beer, wine and attractions all speak for themselves. I don't think Americans generally regard Australians as being "stupid".

Hands down Melissa Chaty should have won. With her work with Alzheimer's, her articulate manner, her outstanding answer to the question posed her at the 1/26/2008 Miss America contest, her outstanding opera singing talent, would have added a touch of class the Miss America contest sorely needs. Others in my viewing group (demographic: 20 y.o. to 85 y.o. men & woman) that originally supported Miss Tennessee & Miss Louisiana ultimately supported Miss California to win after their contestants dropped out. Miss California, Melissa Chaty, won them over. Including Katrina Myrex (spelling) in Missippi, a talent coordinator & beauty pageant advisor in her state, I overheard her speak to the bellman at the Planet Hollywood uttering the same sentiment of at least 10 people in my seating area supporting Melissa Chaty. It's all opinion at this point. Miss Utah, Jill Stevens, would've been a better role model than the current winner. Serving your country is a huge factor and she had amazing support from her military family. But she also took her elimination in an entertaining manner while doing pushups w/some of her fellow competitors on stage. A moment not to be forgotten. But for overall poise, intellect, beauty, grace, humility, Melissa Chaty should have won. But it's a subjective contest with judges who may or may not make the best decisions but were selected for their own accomplishments.

I think you may be stereotyping just a tad, every american I know looks to australia as holy land, intelligent, peaceful folks that arent constantly involved w/ or starting conflict just to be able to smile on TV. Not to many people are behind bush anymore, if they ever were at all.
Did you miss the controversy over our voting policies? Not only is it run by a computer that can be tampered with but if it glitches they dont do a revote, they shrug it off and go close enough, which anymore, might as well, we only have lesser evils to chose from now.

Wow, such a far reaching questoin, please try not to catagorise all Americans as the same. I have many many American e mail friends that do not agree witth Bush polices and hate the thought of all their boys at war. I`m from England which i a lot smaller than both the countries mentiomed and its only the sheer size of population in the Usa that keeps him in the Whitehouse. Not many people agree with his polices here either, but that is Demoracy for you, hope that helps, Norrms

I think they are brainwashed at birth into believing they are biggest and best at everything and won all the wars that they fought in for us so we should be more grateful.
Not all Americans though some obviously do learn to think for themselves and they are the ones that have made it a great country but not the best.
Thor-girl I have lived in Australia my whole life and I have never heard an Australian say Shut your Gob they would use much more colourful language.

Why would any self respecting American listen to some ignorant kid who lives thousands of miles away and doesn't know anything about America past what you read in the media. I suggest you spend more time on your studies and learn a few things before you go defaming an entire nation. I am surprised you even spelled America correctly. I'm in total agreement with the Aussie MEN , shut your gob. NO one really cares what you think here anyhow, your just another product of the video game generation who doesn't know his elbow from his earlobe. Now shoo away boy, and let the grown ups talk.
Chasen54 must be one of your Mates, only less well spoken and more ignorant. Get your education and grow up, and maybe someone will listen to you.
