The current AMD processors are considered to be slower than their Intel Core 2 parallels.
The next generation, AMD K10, shows better performance than the fastest Intel Core 2 on the market.
Just wait untill K10 comes out :)

Yes, AMD processors are good. The Intel Core 2 Duo perform better, but they are more expensive. The AMD Athlon 64x2 in the AM2 socket are the best of the bunch, and for budget systems, they give more bang for the buck than Intel processors in the mid-range performance arena.
CompXPERT - There are quite a few multi-threaded game out right now. Supreme Commander, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Assassins Creed, just to name few. The days of single core being best for games is no more. Why do you think AMD makes their flagship Gaming CPU's - The FX chips - only in dual core now? Dual Core is the future of computing - including gaming.

this is a very wishy washy type of answer, yet it is the closest to the truth.
The new processors are mulitcored, not great for gaming, they run a bit slower than an old processor per core. in order for both cores to be used, the game must be multithreaded, here in-lies the problem.
Games are not multithreaded, therefor a single core processor is better. Now, an AMD is more cost effective, and is a little more efficient, but only in single cores.
The intel chips are way better now adays, they were redesigned from the ground up with the new Core Architecture, They run more efficiently and cooler than the AMD's a definite must.
If you were buying new, if you can find a great single core processor, do it, and an AMD at that, if its dual core, go Intel.

AMD is the preferred chip by gamers. and was the first one that was used for Vista programming. I have used both AMD and Intel chips, and prefer the AMD.

Intel is preferable for speed, power, and battery life. The Turion X 2 is the AMD top of the line and sells at a big discount, so it is basicly a budget decision.

They are both top notch.
Now on selection they make several different ones, it depends on what you are going to be doing with the computer.
