Well I'm kinda new to this rock music stuff. (I've listened to rap my whole life but I thought it was time for a bit of a change). So I don't really know the difference between the mini-genre's of rock music.

Samhain is a good bridge between Glenn Danzig's punk efforts with the punky Misfits, and his more metally band Danzig

highly recommended by the Leech as a good starter band

Quiet Riot's ---bang ur head
i know this is 80s music,, but it screams metal... they were the first metal group to break into the mainstream... at least listen to this song dude... if u came from rap, try the chili peppers...the can do the rap rock good or faith no more..

I hate it when the computer hates me.

Anyway, I was going to write down some of my favorite songs of some good bands, but I'll see what I can do now:

Metal:

Metallica (older stuff from Kill 'Em All to ...And Justice For All or eponymous album Metallica): "Master of Puppets" and "Fade to Black"

Megadeth: "Holy Wars" and "Hangar 18"

Iron Maiden: "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Run To The Hills"

Black Sabbath: "N.I.B." and "Paranoid"

Led Zeppelin (some blues influence especially in their first four or five albums): "Communication Breakdown" and "Achilles Last Stand"

Cream (more blues and psychedelic rock, but influential to metal): "Crossroads" and "Sunshine of Your Love"

Ozzy Osbourne (mostly his first two albums): "Mr. Crowley" and "Crazy Train"

Deep Purple (hard rock/heavy metal): "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water"

AC/DC (hard rock/heavy metal): "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Highway To Hell"

Punk:

The Stooges (proto-metal and protopunk): "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

The Ramones: "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "I Wanna Be Sedated"

The Clash (reggae basslines): "London Calling" and "White Man In Hammersmith Palais"

Sex Pistols (only one album): "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save The Queen"

Yeah, that's pretty much most of the metal and punk stuff I like. Metallica and Megadeth are thrash metal, a subgenre of heavy metal. I especially recommend Metallica and Black Sabbath for metal, and as for punk, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols. The Clash are more skilled though.
