Dreamweaver is probably the best, and is the industry standard for professional web design. Writing a website in straight HTML code takes a lot of HMTL knowledge to be as extensive as creating a site with Dreamweaver. I am a web programming major, and I use Dreamweaver all the time. While it is to your advantage to learn HTML, you have to know a lot of it in order to make an in depth website with grqaphics and CSS. Frontpage is, ah, well it is ok. It has nothing on Dreamweaver. Someone said Dreamweaver was hard, but I disagree. Just toy around with it a bit. If you are dead set on learning it, you will. If you want to, it also helps to take a class in it. Also someone else mentioned Geocities built in Pagemaker. I have used it myself, and I think it is garbage. There is a reason why it is free. I guess it is good for personal web pages or for pages for beginners. You can do a lot more by using Dreamweaver, it gives you way more options than any free software out there.

There are sevealr different softwares out there.
Microsoft's Frontpage
Macromedia's Dreamweaver
Are 2 of the more popular in use there are several others
Flash, iWeb, and on and on.
I suggest you go to the Library and check out books on HTML. and Web Design these will give you a good backround and help you understand what this entails.
Yahoo's Geocities also offer a real good entry level software called Pagemaker, it is a combination of several different softwares that is really easy to use.

For web development, not just one program can make you build a great website.

For the artwork side of the sites I use, Corel, Photoshop, Swish for animations, and then take everything to Dreamweaver.

Even if you build sites in ASP or PHP or HTML it doesnt matter, the standard for today is Dreamweaver.

Layout design go for Adobe PhotoShop
HTML Design go for Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage (I use frontpage most of the time)
For HTML and Server Side scripting coding i use editplus it's much better than notepad.

The best thing to do is to script your own code in notepad. Then upload your web pages. Just google some HTML tutorials. HTML is really easy to learn

Adobe Dreamweaver is probably your best bet. There's a free trial available at adobe.com. Then if you're serious purchase it and go from there. If you're a student, look into student discounts.
