I was trying to convert 174 lbs to kilograms and if in every pound there is 2.2 kg's then why do we not multiply 174 by 2.2kg. But we divide. Since the ratio is 1lb/2.2 kg = 174lb/ x kg. We can cross multiply 174 by 2.2 to get the answer. I have used this method to convert everything else whats wrong?

There are not 2.2 kg in every pound. There are 2.2 lbs in every kilogram. A kilogram is heavier than a pound. Your ratio should be 2.2lb/kg=174lb/x kg

1 kg = 2.2 pounds
1 pound = 1/2.2 kg
So, 174 pounds = 174 * 1/ 2.2 kg

Look again. You have 2.2 kg*174lbs = 1lb*x kg. And yes, if you multiply lbs by 2.2 you get kg ☺

1 kg = 2.2 lb
=> 2.2 lb = 1 kg
=> 1 lb = 1/2.2 kg
=> 174 lb = 174 (1/2.2) kg = 174/2.2 kg

Because kg is larger than lb. In effect, for every kg converted from lb we take out 2.2 from the lb. Example:

6.6 lb and 0 kg
-2.2lb and 1 kg convert 2.2 lb to 1 kg
__________
4.4 lb and 1 kg Total
-2.2lb and 1 kg convert again 2.2 lb to 1 kg
___________
2.2 lb and 2 kg Total
-2.2 lb and 1 kg convert again 2.2 lb to 1 kg
____________
0 lb and 3 kg final total conversion from lb to kg

Such that 6.6 lb / 2.2 = 3 kg

Inversely,
0 lb and 3 kg
2.2 and -1 kg convert 1 kg to 2.2 lb
__________
2.2 lb and 2 kg total
2.2 lb and -1 kg convert 1 kg to 2.2 lb
____________
4.4 lb and 1 kg total
2.2 lb and -1 kg convert 1 kg to 2.2 lb
____________
6.6 lb and 0 kg final total conversion from kg to lb

Such that:
3 kg * 2.2 = 6.6 lb

So to convert 174 lbs to kg:
174 lb / 2.2 = 79.09091 kg

To convert 79.09091 kg to lbs:
79.09091 kg * 2.2 = 174 lbs
