A simple network would require:
- router (with/without wireless ability)
- Network Interface Card (NIC)
- CAT5 network cables
I assume you already have a broadband modem...

You would need a computer with a Wired NIC to setup your router then if you'd prefer switch to a wireless NIC.

If you already have a LAN then there isn't any difference in configuration, except that you will need to setup your router to broadcast a wireless signal, be sure to enable encryption.

The router should have included instructions on how to connect all your components.

Typically a wifi router will come with a single ethernet cable to be used in the initial pc to router set up (typically you cannot configure a wireless router via a wireless connection you need to be Wired). The cables are usually not all that long. So if your pc isn't permanently located near your Cable / DSL modem, pickup a Wireless USB Adapter, or a Wireless PCI card for your pc. Most laptops are equipped with wireless now. if your looking to go wireless with a gaming system also, like a ps2 you'll need a Wireless Ethernet Bridge as well.

The modem runs via cable to the router, and goes into the
INTERNET connection on the back of the router. One cable will run from the pc slot on the router to your desktop network card.

If you have other computers that you want to set up wirelessly, you will need to have a wireless card installed in each computer (newer notebooks have this built in). For each desktop, you will need to get something like a PCI wireless card.

I agrre that you shouldn't ahve to buy any new cable. The existing cable that now runs from your modem directly to your computer now goes into the router, and when you buy the router, it should have one extra cable in the box.

1) If you don't already have one, you will need to connect a modem to the router.
2) You will need a wireless card for each laptop you have, and will need a USB wireless adapter for each desktop computer. There are also PCI wireless cards for desktop computers, but I don't recommend those. Use wireless USB adapters for the desktop computers instead.

I think that you don't need anything else the new router should come with enough wire to make all your connections, and with all the stuff you need.
