I think another universe existed before. My theory is that the universe was expanding then crunching thousands of times. But even if that theory is correct, how was their a universe in the first place. Hit me with as much theories as possible!

My pet theory is that the universe is on of many possible universes. And since we persist in a linear frame of time we feel that there must be a beginning. So you ask the question well what was before the beginning. This is a term that is kind of difficult to grasp as a linear being. I feel that in reality there is no beginning to the superstructure that houses the many infinite possible universes. Time there has a little meaning or influence. and in this state to us would seem a ridiculous thing but in reality of the 'omniverse' of universes its just the way it seems to be. There is one consolation to this. in the whole scheme of things in this sense you really have no beginning nor end. and it is eternal.

Nothing. According to scientific theory, the Big Bang *was* the beginning of the universe. You can't ask about something that existed before the beginning. Time started when the universe was created, an estimated 13-15 billion years ago.
How the universe was created from nothing is another question...

The universe is like a hurricane.
In the tropics the hot air has a potential.
It is eventually triggered by some disturbance causing a few molecules of air to begin rising.
It eventually becomes a roaring maelstrom runs it's course and dissipates over a large area and disappears.
The hurricane is a heat transfer engine.
The universe was also a potential that acts in the same way.
the reason for it's existence may be the hardest question to answer.

Since time came into existence with the creation of the Universe there was no "before". Oddly enough the influential Christian scholar and theologian St Augustine suggested this more than 1600 years ago.

in short one conscioussness wishing to experience itself in its infinite majesty subjectively through different forms and the unlimited levels of existence. the dream and the dreamer are one. the created and uncreated possibility are one. the universe is simply conscioussness exploring conscioussness. An imagining of conscioussness. you are god and god is you or or for you atheists the universe is you and you are the universe, and what came before it, as you are contained within it like an embryo in a womb it is seperate in our minds but is actually an illusion because in reality it is part of the mother and father and part of the whole of the universe as a whole. so before existence was the pure thought of the conscioussness what am i? which then triggered the unlimited possibilites of existence to be played out to infinetly and in infinite universes. every possibility for the answer to the question is played out forever infinitely as there are infinite ways to perceive and experience the nature of yourself..

The Sci-Fi writers have had a lot of fun with that question as well. Get a copy of A.E. van Vogt's "the weapon shops of isher" for one of the earliest stories based on that theme.

If time itself is an integral part of the continuum, created with the rest of it, then the question 'what came before' doesn't mean anything.
