i have no idea how to write a short story all ive ever written are essays and poems we have to read them out loud and get them critiqued, so that kind of intensifies the pressure for me. i dont know how to do this, where to start anything. please help. im only in creative writing one but the class isnt really teaching me anything.. we have to write one essay, short story, poem, and one act play this semester. all we do in class is read our work out loud- it takes about three weeks to get through everybody's bc we only do two a day. after each person reads their essay we usually spend about 3 minutes critiquing it and about 30 minutes discussing the topic it was on (or just some random topic in it the teacher thought was interesting) we've had in-depth discussions on everything from ghosts to i phones to intolerance. im not really learning anything, i took this class hoping to get insight into the writing and editing process and all i do is listen to inane discussions. please help!

You may be learning more than you realize. You seem pretty smart to me, and I imagine that you are doing some private critiquing, sorting out the repetitive inane from the occasional, but satisfying, good. This thought process is preparing you for life, real life, even though you can't understand that now. You are getting a rare peek into how others think, and how their thinking is regarded by others. One of the wisest things you could do now about the class itself is just to try to stay involved (though not necessarily by talking unless required), by observing and making private evaluations. Lots of folks reveal much more than they realize, and this gives them the perfect opportunity to do that, and gives you the perfect opportunity to LEARN from it.
About the short story, that should be easy. Just decide that you will write your story on the first thing said to you by the third person you talk to tomorrow, or some such arbitrary selection, then do it. You don't need to decide ahead of time if it will be a funny story, or a sad one, or dramatic, or moralistic (like Aesop's fables), but it is really fun making up some sort of story with a basis in truth. I hope you do well; you sound as if you are on the way there. Oh, yes, give your teacher a bit of credit. I may be wrong about this, but I imagine that she knows better than you think what she is doing. Creative writing is a very challenging subject to teach without pushing one's own feelings into the students' minds, but forcing them, instead, to think themselves .

Short stories are mainly fictional essays. You have a main character (the hero/heroine), an enemy or someone against what the main character stands for, a situation that has to be resolved, and a conclusion. You could take an event out of your life, such as something funny that happened on a vacation trip or something, change the names and locations, and go from there. Here is a clue to writing--just write what you know about (hobbies, favorite sports, charity work, etc.). You might want to get a journal (even a notebook with blank paper will do) and write in it every day (like a blog but without the internet). The more you write, the better you will get. Just one more thing--DON'T USE TEXT MESSAGE SLANG, like u for you, ur for your, idk for I don't know, etc. Spell out your words correctly.
