"In the event of a chance encounter with a cougar, it is paramount to remove the perceived threat to the animal. Backing away slowly and quietly, at the same time keeping an eye on the animal, can diminish that perceived threat. By running or fleeing, the animal can perceive one as prey. If attacked by a large cat, fighting back is recommended. Making loud noises, picking up a large stick, swinging the arms to make one appear larger may diminish an attack. "

If a cougar is already in your grandmother's yard, it is absolutely imperative to report it to the local DNR and/or the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Please do not involve the police or the local animal control, as that usually results in the tragedy of an animal being shot and killed unnecessarily. The DNR or the US F&W Service will investigate and, if at all possible, relocate this animal to a more remote location.

If you come face to face with a cougar, you should react the same way as if you were faced with an unfamiliar and aggressive dog. If you run away, the cougar will instantly chase you, since you have already established that you are the prey….move backwards without turning your back on the cougar, do NOT stare into their eyes (this is seen as aggressive behavior and the cougar will rise to the occasion), make yourself as big as possible, and if it comes down to it, fight back with everything you have…..they are stalkers, so be very careful…if they are in the yard, they have obviously gotten over their fear of being in the vicinity of humans….

Hold your coat open all the way, on both sides. The cougar will go away. (in a cougars mind, you have just gotten twice your size!)

You should call the police. They will know the right people to call to do something about that. That is a horrible "accident" waiting to happen. They need to move it or eliminate it before someone or their pets get eaten. I was on the trail when two people were attacked at Foothill Ranch a few years ago. They can be seriously dangerous when they loose all fear.
