Wouldn't it be cool if they selled different flavors of popcorn such as caramel, nacho or cheddar cheese at movie theaters? The butter flavored popcorn always taste good of course, but it would be even better if they had a better variety.

Most theaters have the seasonings you can use, but I rather have the real stuff.

I manage a movie theatre and I can tell you from first hand experience that the average customer wants regular buttered popcorn. We offer the seasonings and maybe 1% of customers will get them (granted we do charge rather than offering the free shakers).

At one time we tried doing kettle corn. Rather than popping it fresh, we would pop it and bag it every few days. If we were lucky we would sell 20 bags in a week. The time and labor involved in making the product simply did not warrant continuing to carry it.

Now if your regular theatre is a busy one in a big city market, they might be able to justify having more specialty items - like the "cafe" which serves specialty coffees and/or deserts or a dedicated kettle corn machine. Your best bet would be to convince the manager - or more likely the home office to try out some kind of pre-packaged item.

The other thing you have to realize about theatre popcorn - along with the sodas - is those are the items that pay the bills. Because we rely so much on the snack bar revenue to pay the bills, we usually aren't willing to do much tweaking. Everything else we sell - including candy, hot dogs, nachos, ice cream, etc - is simply to offer choices for the customers that don't buy popcorn and/or soda. We don't sell these items because we make a lot of profit. In fact, soda and popcorn account for around 70-80% of our snack bar revenue.

One more point to add for the people who complain about theatre concession prices. You need to realize the majority of the box office money goes back to the studios - especially during the early weeks of the major blockbusters. Theatres rely in the concession stand to generate the revenue to pay for the the air conditioning, the employees, the insurance, and all the other expenses. We don't charge $6.00 for a large popcorn for the sake of gouging the consumer. And as far as ticket prices, this is driven by the studios as they set a minimum average ticket price which forces theatres to raise their ticket prices.

The local theater I generally frequent does have a variety of popcorn toppings available (vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate, nacho, etc) - they also sell nachos (chips and cheese), a variety of candies and beverages.

Now, if they would just lower their prices on concessions so that I wouldn't need a letter of credit from my bank . . . then they'd have something.

Yes, yes it would. They'd prob only make everything more expensive then (or the popcorn itself would be horribly expensive) :( *sigh* good idea tho :)

that sounds like a great idea...

maybe it could give them a reason to charge $8 bucks for popcorn, instead of the $5.50 we already pay. Damn movie theaters.
