How old is the vehicle? The gears may be stripped. OK, it could be the flywheel is damaged. Try rocking the car back & forth while it's idling in neutral. Sometimes it'll go into gear.
You know when cars get old they do wear out, and it doesn't matter how much transmission fluid it has, if the transmission is shot.
Do you know a good mechanic?

Not much info. If the fluid is full then it can be several things. Newer trannys have computer controls so it may be that computer has gone bad. Always start the cheapest route. Does it have a external filter? If it does change it. If its computer controlled get a tranny shop to check the codes some will do it for free. And lastly you didnt say if it was manual or automatic. If manual its probably the clutch. Hey I can only work with what I Have..LOL

If it's a standard transmission, it could be a throw out bearing, and possibly just a linkage problem, and if it's automatic, it could also be a linkage problem, or the torque converter. I would check out linkage first ofcourse, since that is external, the throw out bearing or torque converter are internal.
