I live in an area where many of the students don't take challenging courses. Because of the low demand, my school doesn't offer AP classes. Instead, my high school only offers honors classes and Im taking as many as possible. I am worried that the high-standard colleges I apply to wont accept me because I haven't taken AP classes. Is this true?

Don't worry. Colleges take into consideration whether or not your high school offers AP courses. In the school report your counselor fills out, he or she lists any AP courses offered. This is how colleges now what kinds of courses are offered in your high school. Just take challenging courses and work hard to get all A's. Colleges judge on how well you do in your classes, so work hard!

AP classes are good if you're up for the challenge but in order for you to get college credit for the course you have to get at least a 3 to pass. And lets say you get the 3, some colleges see that you took the class and passed the exam but you only got a 3... other kids may have gotten a 4 or 5. So there's no guarantee that colleges will be impressed with you for taking an AP class. There are other ways to impress colleges like giving back to the community, extracurricular activities, sports... etc. They like to see those too. College is getting harder and harder to get into so you have to understand that first. It all depends which college you apply to and what their requirements are. You should look that up.

In my area, local colleges and universities allow honors students whose high schools don't offer AP courses to take those courses on their campuses. If the students do well, they receive AP or college credit. Maybe you can explore this idea with your counselor or local college. You may even start a trend. The Ivy League universities are very competitive and merely telling them you didn't take AP because it wasn't available isn't going to make them feel very sympathetic to you. You need to take the initiative and you seem to have the intelligence to do so.

You can ask your counselor about the equivalency of honors classes and AP classes. I think, though, that they are not the same, and high-standard colleges require actual AP classes.

You should go see if there's a community college nearby that accepts high schoolers who want to take college classes (I am currently signed up in 2 college classes in addition to my high school ones). I urge you to talk to your counselor about this matter immediately, so that you do not regret not taking AP classes when you go to college.

If you want to take AP classes, check with your district or state to see if any are offered either online or through some other kind of distance learning.
