I am a single guy with a big dog that I bring everywhere. I'm looking for a decent car that's under 28k and will be comfortable for my dog, especially as he gets older.

I don't like SUVs. For one thing, they're hard for older dogs to get into since the tailgate is up so high. I want something the dog can just walk into on his own and then have plenty of space to lay down. I know the Honda Element could work for this purpose, but I don't find it all that comfortable. Any other ideas?

Chrysler PT Cruiser. You can fold down the rear seats and your doggy will have plenty of room, it's not very high off the ground. It's also very room and can be had with a turbo or normally aspirated 4 cylinder engine.

And they do make ramps that make it easier for older dogs to get in/out of cars.

I would hope that I could convince you to buy American, at least. The new Ford Edge may fit the bill. Since you have the dog, I would suggest going with the lesser models, the ones that have the vinyl seats, and rubber floor mats. I know with my old truck, it was easy to pull the drain plugs and just turn the hose on the interior and wash it out, if there was mud or dirt on the floorboards.

The new cross-overs are lower to the ground and smaller, which will give you better gas mileage.

Good luck with the car.

consider buying a used car or a car with fabric interior that you can lay a blanket on you could do this with leather also -

consider a hatchback ( ugly word ) but kia spectra 2002 is a nice one doesnt look like a hatch back - any car really that has a higher seat so your friend can look out if he wants - and a fold down seat - or do like i do throw the blanket - keeps the seats clean - and the dog can lay down or sit up -

depends on the type of vehicle u like. the element is uncomfortable, but easy to clean out because of it's design. a mini van like a gmc safari would be good. if it's too high for ur dog to jump into, then just get one of those plastic step stools that dogs can climb up and into the van.
there's lots of space in mini vans and they can be cozy for pets.
even the bed of a pick-up would be good. ur dog can climb up using a step stool and it's aesy to clean out. u can put a cap on it, plus blankets or something for comfort.
or if u get urself a nice truck or something, there's all kinds of stuff u can get to protect ur interior (incase somethin happens) have u considered station wagons? or,maybe not, alot of guys don't like them. i know i don't!

Try a volkswagon golf hatchback with out the cargo cover and the rearseats folded, or a small minivan with a low hatch height.

Probably one of the crossovers like the Chevy Equinox, Acura MDX types would probably be your best bet. I imagine if SUVs are out trucks are out. Dogs love trucks!!
