We have fixed up the bathroom really nice at our place, but we need to fix the smell of cat pee under the sink before we move! I would hate to fix up the bathroom just to leave it smelling like cat pee!! We live in a mobile home from the 70's and would like to know if we could replace the whole sink area, or if we could somehow get rid of the cat pee smell some other way. Please help us with some other ideas besides bleach and vinegar. We need to fix our place up to sell it, and we don't want it to look like crap. Thanks so much!!!

When I worked in a veterinary clinic about 6 years ago, one of the products that we sold was Odor-Out. You'll look at it and think twice because it's a green goo you rub into your carpet and let dry. Once it's dry you use a steam cleaner or carpet shampooing unit to get the goo out (the green tint won't stain, but let's you see if you've got it all out.) If you want to check the area after you've cleaned it to be sure that all of the cat pee is gone, you can use a blacklight to check for green, or yellow spots. Those are the cat pee. Generally, if you can't see it (with a blacklight), you won't get any smell from it. From one of the cleaners that came into our clinic a lot, I learned that carpet padding makes all the difference in the world when removing animal stains. Unpadded carpet can usually be "fixed" in one or two cleanings, where as padded carpets require anywhere from 5-10 cleanings (normally) to be rid of animal stains.

There enzyme based products in the most pet stores that are designed specifically to break down cat pee.

Yikes! I have had this problem before, too. I would recommend replacing the whole sink. For carpet material things, you can get rid of the smell, but for this, trust me, just replace the sink.

bleach 2 -3 times a day should take care of the problem. Takes a few weeks though. Know that is not the answer you wanted, but it is the solution.
