Is it leaking at the space where the toilet meets the floor?
If so, you need to shut off the water and buy a new wax "donut" to re-seal between the toilet bowl and the floor. You'll need to measure the dimensions of the bottom of your toilet.
The people at Home Depot or Lowes will help you find one and perhaps give you tips on how to install it.

The o-ring gasket that seals the connection between the toilet and the sewer pipe is probably bad. You'll need to replace it. It's a round thing made out of beeswax or something similar.
shut off the water
disconnect the fittings
remove the toilet from the floor
clean away the old gasket
apply the new gasket
replace the toilet
reconnect the fittings
call the plumber to come do it properly once you realize it's all gone to hell.

You have to cut off the water supply to the toilet... Then get all the plastic covering the nuts and remove them.. Once you get them off you have to carefully pry the toilet loose from the floor and set it aside. Then buy at lowes or home depot or a hardware store a toilet wax ring.. You will see the old one that is torn up or part missing attached around the sewer pipe. You have to scrape all the old stuff off, of the sewer pipe and bottom toilet. Then remove the paper from the new wax ring and place it around the sewer pipe, replace the hardware that comes with the ring.. Place the toilet back on the ring and carefully tighten the nuts. If you over do it it will crack the toilet , if you under do it it will leak again...
Stuarts answer is better I forgot about disconnecting the water supply... Still want to do it?

It's the wax seal between the bottom of the toilet and the floor flange. Wait for the plumber it could end more of a job than just changing the seal, a lot of times the floor flanges are corroded to the point that they need replacing. Also you may need new bolts,a water supply line,a shut off, just to many variables.

Head over to Home Depot, Lowe's or Sears. In the plumbing section, get a wax floor seal.
Turn off the water leading to the tank. Empty the tank. Use a sponge to get the last water out. Disconnect the water line. Take the tank lid off and put it somewhere where it won't get broken.
Unscrew the nuts on the sides holding it to the floor. Gently rock the toilet off the floor seal. Put it where it won't get broken.
Remove the old seal. Place the new seal in. Reseat the toilet on the seal. Sit on the seat to press it down on the wax seal. Replace the nuts that hold it down.
Reconnect the water, replace the tank lid, and live long and prosper.

It is one of two things. It is either the O ring gasket or if you have a septic tank system then it will leak because your drainfield is blocked or the tank is backed up ( blocked). This happened to us. You will need to have a septic service come and flush it out.
