Buy as much ram as the MB can handle, if you only have 2 slots and your running xp I'd say buy 1 stick @ 2gb and the second @ 1gb, xp can only handle 3.5 total so don't waste your$
Run a program called ram booster 2.0 , its free and will auto optimize/free up ram for you!
check what startup programs are set to run, delete the non crucial ones, this will really speed it up!
Of course defrag often once a month really depends on how much deleting of files you do.
Registry cleaning I think helps alot also.
I run anti virus= but don't like ones that take up too much system resources like ram, Mcafee seems to be excellent for this.
Make sure desktop has as little on it as possible and the background picture should be really basic. you don't have to delete your desktop icons just move them to my documents or create 1 master folder for desktop to have quick acces to them!
Last go to control panel - performance and maintnance- adjust visual effects - unclick all the boxes EXEPT the last 4 boxes , and smooth edges over screen fonts (also near bottom)
If you run games close almost every program running - using task manager - alt cntrl del that takes up cpu usage, basically everything exept SYSTEM and Local Service and Network Service files

Defrag, clean up & most important is to remove the programs that are not needed in the autostart list (When windows starts) as this makes windows slow from the start..
p.s. Don't keep files which you don't need, or setup files that you used already!
Hope this helps & good luck,

run virus programs, trojan programs, defrag on a weekly basis, keep your internet temporary files clean. Ad wares, get rid of those. Some say a weekly maintenance of these will help, I encourage every three days.

Make sure you have good virus and spam software. Run your disk cleanup and defragmenter every so often. Keep your registry clean. There are good free downloads for alot of these if you don't have them already.
