Heck no! What if I were to write like this without any punctuation at all it's really confusing isn't it but then some people talk like this but if you want to look like an idiot then don't use punctuation like I'm doing right now punctuation also separates different sentences together so it doesn't look all jumbled up. Okay, now I'm bugged. Just use it. English teachers love correct punctuation usage.

No.

It is not overrated, but, it is misunderstood.

Even in some spell check programs the punctuation for complex and compound sentences is not correct in the program forcing people to use semicolons where a comma should be.

In this place punctuation can help you to be creative if you know what you are doing, but if you don't; you can come off looking like a fool.

I try not to look foolish.

Do you mean like the Henry james style of writing which goes on for pages without a comma period or any other form of stop so eventually you run out of breath trying to figure out what the heck hes writing about?
Punctuation is needed, even, though, it, can, be, over, used.

There's an old anecdote about punctuation -

An English professor asked his college class the punctuate the following sentence:

"A woman without her man is nothing"

The men punctuated this as:

"A woman, without her man, is nothing"

The women punctuated it as:

"A woman: without her, man is nothing"

Punctuation clarifies the expression of your idea. It's not overrated.
