I have a 2004 Cavalier and bought it from a dealer about 3 months ago. Everything has been running perfect. Then during a traffic jam my car began to kick a little when I stepped on the gas and then stalled completely. I put the car in neutral and started it again without a problem.
The oil light went on when it stalled.
Anyone have any ideas?

If the oil light came on BEFORE it stalled yo would have an internal engine problem (wear and tear) and this would make the pressure drop and the car would stall. Since you had no catastrophic failure like a loud banging or other internal noise you are OK.

This sounds like you have a catalytic convertor that is near the end of its life and is creating too much back pressure on the exhaust gases coming out of the engine. Small engine cars driven almost exclusively in the city will plug up the cat convertor faster than a highway driven car.

However, I would do some simple basic things first:

1. Clean the throttle body.
2. Check the air filter
3. Check your oil level
4. Check your coolant level
5. Make sure the radiator fan comes on when the engine is hot.

Even if you are slightly low on coolant this can occur since the cylinder head suffers first as the coolant level is too low.

If you are low more than a quart of oil, more like two or three quarts, the pressure will drop and and stall the engine.

Good Luck!

thos cars are sencitve on the gas issue i worked 2 years mechanic and i own a 2000 chevy cavalier the tem is always high on thos cars i guess that's how the factory want it. on ur car it seem like it's air flow sencor just simply change ur air filter and also spray some carburator cleaner in the air chamber that is going to the engine...it would also help keeping ur engine clean but i'am sure ur air filter is very dirty also it's better to clean the box that hold the air filter out cause otherwise it would just go back to ur engine and make ur oil dirty ... u can send me a message if u have any other question or im on shadow_relevant03 i'am actually online too good luck ..

Most places now you can just call 911. In some states, the state police will post an additional number on a sign when you enter the state, so look for that.
